Lions Hit the Track to Prepare for 2018
The Hay Lions have secured the coaching services of Daniel Gash for the 2018 Golden Rivers Football Season. Gash returns to Hay having represented the club throughout his junior football and last played for the Lions in the 2015 season where he was an integral part of a side that was beaten in the Preliminary Final that year.
Gash is an experienced campaigner on the field with a tough, uncompromising approach to the footy through the midfield. He has played in top-level leagues around Victoria, most recently playing for Wedderburn in the North Central Football League. In his time at Wedderburn, Gash has played in five premierships, including coaching three consecutive titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was also named coach of the North Central Football League representative side in 2015 and 2016 and brings with him a proven record of coaching success.
Gash has been hard on the recruitment trail in preparation for the 2018 season. With a focus on bringing back ex-Hay locals to the club, Joel Newnham and James Faulkner have both expressed their desire to play in the red, gold and blue with another few ex-Lions players also close to signing. With Thomas McGufficke also returning after a year away and the core of last year’s side looking likely to return in 2018, the Lions are building confidently into the pre-season.
Off the field, the Lions AGM was held last week with a strong roll up of members. Nick Baird was returned as club President, with George Auldist elected Vice-President. Jade Auldist and Sharon Cox returned in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, with Lindy Stewart (Publicity Officer), Buck Howard (Public Officer) and Bronwyn Hicks (Netball Co-ordinator) rounding out the executive positions. They will be well supported by committee members Mark Newnham, John Headon, Therese Murphy, Kate Buckmaster, Ross Hurst, Pat Nolen, Mick Cattanach and Jose Rubio.
The 2018 draw will be finalised this week at the Golden Rivers AGM, however Old Boys Day will certainly return next season. Final dates for social events will be confirmed in the near future.
Pre-season training for senior football commenced last Friday with another session planned for 6.15pm this Friday 1 December at Number Two Oval. Any players interested are encouraged to come down and have a run
