Round 10 V Macorna
Under 14’s Football
25th June 2016

Last Saturday saw one of the best games of the season from the Hay Lions under fourteen side. They showed real steel in their approach to what was to prove a very hard fought game.

From the first bounce Macorna came out swinging and our defence proved it was up to the task. The back six of Hay were ready to take on all comers and continually sent the ball back in Hays direction. Jack Headon, Del Crighton, Ferg Cattanach and Ben Caughey were on fire. When the ball found its way into our forward line the good play of players such as Jack Miller and Hugh Crighton was being fought off equally as well by the Macorna defence. Ken Hargreaves had a chance to put us on the board early, however the ball brushed the goal post for a minor score.

The pressure didn’t ease in the second as Macorna scored a major and their big players were using the ball well. Adrian Pascoe was continually hitting the ball hard and teaming up with Del Crighton and Finn Cullenward and were proving to be a real head ache for Macorna. Angus Gardiner was showing Macorna how we tackle in Hay and was winning the ball regularly. At the large break Hay was behind however they weren’t showing any signs of defeat.

The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with both sides not wanting to give an inch. Hay continually worked forward with the good play starting deep in the back line and players such as Lane Griffith and Lachy Clarke were having a real influence. Hugh Crighton took a strong mark and scored a major, however Macorna quickly replied.

In the last quarter the majority of play was in the Hay forward line,
however with Macorna holding the lead they stacked their backline to thwart Hay’s attack. Some very good work from the wrong side of the centre line saw Boh Learmonth and Tom Christensen use the ball well and send Hay forward. Time and time again Hay was deep in their own forward line, however all this good play was only resulting in minor scores. The result being that Hay drew level in the final minutes of the game and that’s how the game finished.

A big well done should go out to Bailey Caughey who played the whole game for Macorna and can hold his head high for giving one hundred percent.

Final Score: Hay 1-6-12 to Macorna 2-0-12

Goal Kicker: Hugh Crighton

Better players were Hugh Crighton, Boh Learmonth,Del Crighton,Adrian Pascoe, Angus Gardiner and Ben Caughey.
